Sturgeon Tracker (frasersturgeon.org) · last updated November 2, 2026
Sturgeon Tracker is a fishing journal and information site for white sturgeon on the Fraser River. This page explains what we collect, why, and what control you have. In short: your journal is private to you, we never sell your data, and we never publish where you fish.
What we collect
- Your Google account basics when you sign in: name, email address and profile picture. We don't get your password or access to anything else in your Google account.
- What you log: catches (tag number, size, date and time, bait, notes and similar), trips, photos you upload, saved spots and reports of when the current turns.
- Location: the spot of a catch or trip — from “Use my location”, a pin you drop on the map, or the GPS data inside photos you upload (we tell you when a photo carries a location).
- Basic usage: daily counts of which features are used (for example, how many people open the tide forecast), and the usual server logs needed to run and secure the site.
How we use it
- To show you your own journal, maps, statistics and tide information.
- To add public conditions to your catches (water level, weather, tide) from government sources — only the time and place are used for this, never your name.
- To tell you when a fish you logged is caught again, if you have notifications on.
- To improve the site and its tide and current estimates.
What other people can see
- Your journal, photos, exact locations, bait and notes are private: only you and the site administrator can see them.
- If you choose to share a catch with the community, an anonymous record is kept for science: tag number, date, size and the 10-km stretch of river — never your name, exact spot, bait, notes or photos. These records stay even if you later delete the catch, because they are part of the public picture of the sturgeon population.
- Share cards you create show only what is on the card; they never include your spot or coordinates.
Who we share it with
We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't use it for advertising. We rely on a few services to run the site:
- Google — sign-in.
- Cloudflare — delivers the site securely to your browser.
- Email delivery (if notification emails are on) — to send you those emails.
The government services we read data from (BC Data Catalogue, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment Canada) receive no personal information from us. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
Cookies
We use one sign-in cookie to keep you logged in, and your browser's local storage for things like the offline queue and remembered settings. No advertising or tracking cookies.
Keeping and deleting your data
- We keep your data while you have an account. You can edit or delete any catch, trip, photo or saved spot yourself.
- To delete your whole account, email [email protected]; we'll remove your account and personal data within 30 days (anonymous community records excepted, as above).
- You can also ask for a copy of your data at the same address.
Security
Connections are encrypted (HTTPS), and private pages and photos are only served to their owner. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable care to protect your information.
Children
The site isn't aimed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll say so on the site. The date at the top shows the latest version.
